OVER $3 MILLION DONATED TO THE FUTURE OF ALASKA FISHERY SCIENCE
American Seafoods has given $3.7 million overall in the last 20 years to support research that benefits Alaska’s fishing communities and Southeast programs via the Pollock Conservation Cooperative (PCC). The PCC provides grants to faculty at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) and stipends to graduate students for research on pollock, other groundfish species, the fisheries for these species, and marine mammals.
This Research Center was founded by American Seafoods and other harvest companies to establish a research center at UAF and is celebrating over 20 years of partnership with the PCC. “The establishment of the Pollock Conservation Cooperative Research Center has resulted in a greatly improved understanding of the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea fisheries,” said S. Bradley Moran, Dean at the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Science. “We are very appreciative of the investments in research and education made by the PCCRC.”
The investment has helped not only the students at the university but also Alaska’s fishing community statewide. PCC has provided funding for grant fellowships, marine education, technical training and equipment, and other areas of education. It has supported in total nine graduate research fellows at UAF, who are committed to two to three years of research.
An additional 38 graduate students and postdoctoral students have also been funded through the PCC and have completed a total of 78 unique research projects.
“Thank you for your generous support and funding. I have been able to work closely with researchers at NOAA and acquired experiences and education I would not have had otherwise.” — Patrick Barry a Ph.D. student who graduated in December 2021.
American Seafoods also takes leadership positions in industry efforts to research and advance seafood sustainability through our participation in the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) and Alaska’s Responsible Fisheries Management Program.
